We the people!
Native Americans: Native Americans in the United Sates were still victims of racism, injustices and bad treatment. In 1968 the AIM (American Indian Movement) was created in order to protect and help Native Americans that were subjects of violence from police officers and other governmental institutes. Civil rights activists made demonstrations and protests about equality among Native Americans and whites. The Black Panther Party was a party of revolutionary men and women that stood to help anyone in need that was being victim of police and law enforcement brutality, many Civil rights activists joined this party in order to challenge and protect Native Americans. Violence was very common in this time period because new ideals for a perfect society were coming to light and different opinions rose to the surface but with time and patience and little by little Native Americas were able to achieve better standards for living. LGBT: LGBT stands for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender people. In the 70’s LGBT’s were victims of violence and police brutality, drastic measures were taken by the LGBT community, the stonewall riots were the beginning of the demonstrations and the protests because they were spontaneous riots by the gay community which demanded equal rights and demanded that the violence stopped immediately. The Stonewall riots is considered to be the event that led to the gay liberation movement. Many establishments did not serve or accept openly gay people so when discrimination got stronger and the hatred began to spread the gay community retaliated with demonstrations that lead to modern civil rights that LGBT’s now have. It is evident that the hard times that this generation had to surpass was a great help for new generation of modern LGBT’s, this is why the gay liberation movement is so important. Women:The 1970’s were a turbulent era for women and women rights because job opportunities were not equal for men and women. It was a hard labor life where women had to settle for low wages and bad working conditions where they were discriminated or sexually assaulted. The feminist movement began when women realized that they could do the same things as men or they could do them even better. Demonstrations and protests began to rise in 1960 and went on into the 70’s as well. In 1923 the Equal Rights Amendment was proposed to the U.S. Constitution that would grand women equality amongst men but it was not until the 70’s that the Amendment was sent to congress so it could be voted on but it ultimately fell short and did not become part of the constitution by the decision of only 3 states. Women used many methods to obtain equality but it was not achieved. Today women have become equal under the law and it is very important to know the efforts made by women in the 70’s to realize how society works.
